Provence & Christmas Time
Day 1 : You'll be shown to your bedroom on arriving, and then invited to join us downstairs for a few sips of local apéritif drinks while discussing the week's programme and trying a few shots at pétanque (the local bowl game). Dinner will then be served.
Day 2 : The Crèche and santons (Christ's Stable and Christmas figurines) : In Provence, the deep-rooted tradition of setting up the Crèche in December dates back to early Christian times. The word santon is derived from Provençal santoun which means Little Saint. As to the word Crèche, it stems from crupio, meaning "stable trough". After breakfast, you will learn how to build a Crèche and pay a visit to a santon maker. Then you'll be on your way to Avignon where the Christmas Market and the gigantic Crèche situated in the Town Hall will be waiting for you.
Day 3 : After breakfast, you'll be headed towards the Mont Ventoux area to admire the Christmas lighting in local villages. We'll then be following the Côtes du Rhône Villages Wine Road for a bout of wine-tasting in various cellars. Back to the mas for dinner.
Day 4 : The Gros Souper ("Big Supper") : In Provence as in other places, families gather together on the 24th of December to celebrate the birth of Christ. A specific meal is cooked on this occasion : the "Big Supper" !
After breakfast at the mas, you will be told what are the main Christmas dishes and how they are cooked (including the 13 desserts...). First of all, you'll be browsing through the weekly food market at Saint-Rémy de Provence in the company of your chef, and there you're sure to find all the ingredients needed to cook this meal, and then share it together.
Day 5 : After breakfast, a christallised fruit factory is your destination. This kind of fruit is used in the making of the gâteau des rois or Twelfth Night Cake. In Provence there are 2 kinds : the couronne des rois (ring-shaped brioche with christallized fruit) and the galette (puff pastry with frangipani). You can eat it throughout January. After the visit, we're bound for Saint Michel de Frigolet Abbey to hear Christmas Carols. Back to the mas for dinner.
Day 6 : Breakfast is followed by a little hike in the Alpilles mountains with a truffle specialist who will tell you how to harvest this little black diamond ! Keep this precious advice in store as you cook a meal revolving around truffles with a French chef, and then savour it together !
Day 7 : You start back to Weinheim after breakfast.
